This 30-minute video, suitable for all fitness levels, is a terrific counterpoint to a day of stress or as a complement to intense conditioning or aerobics plans. The routine begins with about seven minutes of standing poses and stretches, with emphasis on areas that tend to hold stress, such as shoulders, neck, and back (and those with chronic neck problems should definitely work up slowly to the full range of motion in the arm circles). The rest of the routine is done on the floor, combining stretches such as spinal twists, modified yoga moves like cobra and child's pose, and lots of nourishing deep breathing. Be sure to have handy a folded blanket or towel, as well as some kind of long strap--a bathrobe belt will do. The music and Smith's calm instructions are soothing without being distracting, as is the ocean backdrop used for the floor exercises. Try this routine a couple of nights a week after work, and see if you don't get a much deeper night's rest. --Anne Hurley

A few years ago, this tape helped me overcome chronic low back pain. A massage therapist recommended it for it's precise, careful, gentle and mindful routine. She noted that most people overstretch in yoga and inadvertantly injure themselves. I used the tape 3-5 nights per week before bed--a kind of meditation in motion.I had memorized the routine, but without the video I would rush, neglect to breath and relax properly, and would not get the full and amazing sense of physical and mental relaxation that came from following along with the voices, music, and pacing of the video.I've been doing a more challenging yoga routine for the last 5 years, but the old low back pain has returned and I'm turning back to this tape for my therapy! Wish they offered it on DVD.One caution: the music and studio setting are not very inspiring or beautiful, but they're not distracting either.
